Updates

Here is a picture of Mom and Dad AFTER they rode over 60 miles for the Hotter N Hell! Don't they look great! It was over 100 degrees, but they were able to finish the ride in under 3.5 hours! Very impressive, no?

On Mom's birthday the other day, I drove up and surprised her at work! If you didn't hear her scream of surprise across your portion of the globe, then I am surprised! She was quite shocked and it was fun to be able to do that for her birthday!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!

Here is my favorite picture of my mom and me. I like it because it shows just how much I look like her, and I am always flattered when people tell me that, "You are just like your Mom."

Mom, I hope that you have a wonderful day! I love you!!!

Foot Photos

This blog is in honor of my brother Marty.
It all began when he tried to take a picture of the ground and accidentally got a portion of his foot in the picture. Now it's become something he does and I do for fun! We have pictures of our feet all over: China, Thailand, Costa Rica, DC, NC, and more! Here is Brett and me (and the umbrella) in Tiananmen Square of Katy, Texas.

Forbidden...Gardens!

Today Merritt took me to Forbidden Gardens, a Texas knock-off of the Forbidden City in Beijing and the terra-cotta army. It was really cool! The Forbidden City is the secret city that contained the Chinese imperial family for centuries. You've all seen it -- it's behind Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The terra-cotta warriors are life sized warriors created in the BC era to guard the toom of Emperor Qin. There are something like 8,000 of them. The place we went had thousands of them, but only 1/3 the size. We went because Merritt's brother Marty is in China right now and has been to all of these places.

Monk-e-mail

My college roommate Lauren introduced me to this site, and Brett and I have been enjoying it thoroughly! Go here.

Hotter 'N Hell Hundred

Right now my brother Mike and my parents should be sleeping, preparing to get up early tomorrow morning to ride in the Hotter 'N Hell. That's 100 miles or 100k in 100 degree weather. Sounds grand, no? Pray that they get good rest, that it's not too hot (relatively speaking!), and that they are all safe. Mike is riding with a group; my parents are riding with the tandem bikers! Buena suerte!

Scrapbooking

Here is how I plan to spend most of my afternoon. I completed these pages yesterday, and I am hoping to get a few more done today! It's amazing the number of pictures I have accumulated over the last 6 years!

I hate birds

Those of you who really know me are completely aware that I don't care for birds (I can see Jeni laughing at this point, recalling the mockingbird that attacked me.). I don't need any more excuses to dislike these creatures. But I have one.

At first, we thought it was our bed or the fan. Things squeak. But now we know. Every evening around 9, a bird begins it's squawking. Not singing. Maybe we could call it chirping. At any rate, it's annoying. This bird doesn't stop until the first light of day. Right near our bedroom. So, as we try to fall asleep to the dull noise of the fan, we have a bird of some sort that breaks the rhythm with it's talking. And for this, I have yet another reason to dislike birds.

and now I don't even like computer graphics of them, since this one is actually supposed to be animated!

Rain!

It's raining right now, and I absolutely love it! It seems as though the Houston weatherman always include some percentage of rain each day, so I've come to doubt the validity of his predictions. Yet tonite, he had it correct! Maybe it was growing up somewhere that received hardly any rain. I don't know, but I relish being at home, hearing the thunder crash and the rain pour down. Lucky for me, I've moved to a city that receives more rain than Seattle. That's right, ladies and gents: Houston gets more rain than Seattle. When it rains here, it pours! I'm going to find a book and settle down to listen and read.

Netflix

Brett and I decided that we would subscribe to Netflix. In case you don't know what it is, "let me esplain. No, there is too much; let me sum up." (can you name that movie!?). We pay a fee each month and get movies sent through the mail. They include the envelope and postage is already paid. Quite a good deal, especially considering we would normally spend about $4 on each movie. Now we can rent unlimited amounts, and I think we have already gotten our money's worth! Give us a list of some of your favorite movies we should watch!

Madi

I've been sifting through old emails and finally downloaded pictures I've received of my niece and nephew over the last month. This is Mike and Jeni's daughter. Isn't Madi SO cute!? She's loves to use her face since she can't express herself with words....yet!

Adios Krispy Kreme

Krispy Kreme is widely celebrated as THE donut shoppe. After all, where else can you go watch the donuts bake and the sugar be poured on. And who can dare pass up one of those "Hot now" signs!? Coming from the KK capital and originating city, we know these things to be true.

However, Brett and I now have a new love: Shipley Donuts. All over town we see these places and wondered just how good they are. This morning, I snuck out of bed to go get some for us to try. They are good. Nothing beats a Hot KK donut, but if you can't have a hot one, we definitely suggest Shipley's.

Happy 11th, Matt and Erin!

Today is the wedding anniversary of my brother Matt and his wife Erin! I hope you two have a great day and reminisce about your wedding! Did you buy one another any steel? That's the 11 year anniversary gift. =) We love you both!

'Stros Game

It's our first official weekend here in Houston after one week of routine. A friend from work gave Brett tickets to the Astros game, so we headed out to Minute Maid park. I met Brett in his garage and we strolled along the streets of downtown Houston. Both of us enjoyed a hot dog and coke and a few innings of the game. We left during the 5th inning to walk back to our cars, a little over a mile away. The best part of the evening was the bike taxi that took us to our cars!

Oh--and the Astros did win, by the way.

Brett goes to work!

Today was Brett's official start to his career! He'll actually have to hold a job for more than just the length of a summer! From his report, though, it sounds like he's going to love being a law clerk. Reading, researching, and writing are some things he does very well!

Staples...not the Office Depot kind

We had great success with our move-in! The truck arrived when they had said, we were able to park fairly close to our apartment, and Brett and I successfully unloaded almost all we could within 3 hours! Here's what our truck looked like when it arrived:

Ginger Driver (family friend) brought us lunch and came to help me do some organizing. About 30 mins after she had arrived, Brett comes into the apartment with blood running down his head. Apparently, as he was moving things in the truck the headboard hit him...on the head! Ginger was a god-send as her "mom instincts" kicked in and she helped to stop the bleeding and keep Brett from passing out. More importantly, she knew where the hospital was in order to take him to the ER. About four hours later Brett returned with staples in his head! Ouch!

Besides that mishap (which really has nothing to do with the company itself), we highly recommend using ABF! We have done two moves with them now and have been totally pleased! And now we just have to organize!
